How to Import Comments from a YouTube Video

These features available on All Plans

Use the Social Import Tool to import comments from any public video on YouTube into a ShortStack list. From there, you can select a random winner using the Entries Manager or display the comments in a campaign using an Entry Display Widget. 

Let's get started with how to import the comments from YouTube:

  1. Starting from the Home page, click on Manage, then select Lists in the dropdown to access your Lists Manager page.

  2. To import into an existing list: Click the down arrow to the right of the ShortStack list you’d like to import the data to, then click on Import from...

    Then click on YouTube on the left.

    If you're looking to import into a fresh new list: Click the Social Import link at the top of the Lists Manager.

    Then click on YouTube on the left.

  3. Enter the URL for the YouTube video you wish to pull comments from in the Enter a YouTube Video URL field.

  4. Underneath that section, you will have a few options on how comments are imported: First, you can Import comment likes as votes. This allows for well-liked comments to receive more points (entries/votes) when selecting a random winner. This gives the commenter with a lot of likes more weight towards winning a prize. Allow multiple entries per user will allow multiple comments from the same user to be pulled in as individual entries. Lastly, you can Restrict valid entries to a date range to make sure comments were within your selected contest period. Once checked, a date range will appear for you to enter the valid dates. 

  5. Continue
  6. Add a new name for your list in the field provided, and also any tags you would like the imported entries to have. 

  7. Click Start Import. If importing a lot of entries, it might take several minutes, but you will receive an email once all comments have been imported.

    Note: The YouTube Comment Import Tool does not import comment replies, only original comments.
